Dev's Comments

"Ages of Athiria is a truly dynamic game, providing its players the real ability to affect the world around them. Several player-driven systems, especially player-run cities and their justice systems, form the foundation of a game with incredible potential for social interaction and intriguing political subplots."

Character Development

A player has eight primary attributes, Strength, Dexterity, Body, Agility, Will, Intelligence, Charisma, and Luck. All of these abilities help define the character and limit or enhance the ability of a character to interact with the world using skills. It is intended that there will be no 'leveling' system but rather a system of advancing your character through practice of using a particular skill.

Social/Class/Guild Structure

There are no character classes in Ages of Athiria. Your character is defined by his/her skills, relationships, and accomplishments.

A cost is associated with forming a guild and mechanisms in the game will facilitate the collection of this cost from the initial founding group of players. Guilds are able to purchase land and place a guildhouse on it. It is then the responsibility of the guild to keep the maintenance of the guildhouse and the land current. Owning land and houses has maintenance costs associated with them.

There are plans to allow guilds to build their own quests for its members. This should allow the guilds to have specific membership quests, or promotion quests for members to perform. The guild questing interface will serve as a major way for guilds to get its goals accomplished.

Villages are world recognised and will also be registered as a "faction" with the world. A player that murders someone will not only get a faction hit with that guild, but also with that village. When the village is formed, its leaders will have the ability to issue quests, organise a hierarchy to run the village, and assign functions to officers to manage the citizens. It will be possible to establish numerous types of government. As villages grow they become towns, and then they become cities or castles, and eventually they can grow to be sprawling kingdoms.

Combat/Skills

Your character will be able to perform specialised combat manouvres based on the skills and abilities of that character. It should be noted that the character will be able to perform complex multiple skill manouvres once they have gained the appropriate skills. The number of skills that your character can gain will number in the hundreds. These include melee combat, casting magic spells, sneaking in the shadows, entertaining crowds, or obtaining and selling merchandise.

Quests

In Ages of Athiria your character will be able to go on static quests, player-created quests, and dynamic quests.

PvP

Player Killing in Athiria comes with strong penalties regardless of the reason. Declarations of war and consensual duels minimises the impact of the penalties, but they are never be completely erased. When you kill another player, various factions suffer, especially the factions representing the citizenship of the victim. In Athiria, PvP is not a separate system as it is in many other games. The Athiria PvP system has features that are present in the real world. If you kill a player character, expect your life in game to become significantly more difficult, as NPCs and other players will begin to react to you in a manner appropriate to your "inappropriate" behavior. Nobody should expect an easy life after murdering another player. If someone attacks you, then that person is the aggressor and you are in self-defense mode against that person. If you defend yourself successfully, you will not get a murder flag because you were in self-defense mode.

Siege combat is a form of large scale combat between two cities. It is the set of rules governing the management of war. When a consensual combat between cities is established, the attacker and defender will engage through the use of the military sub-game. The military sub-game provides communication channels, tactical commands and access to siege weaponry so that a city can be destroyed or defended.

Lore

The great being sighed, sending a small rocky planet hurtling across the galaxy to crash into the larger of two suns. As the planet was engulfed in an explosion of shattering rock and burning gas, he paused. For the past several million years the being had searched galaxy after galaxy for some harbinger of intelligence. To his great chagrin, he had been unable to find anything in the vast void except masses of burning gas and countless dead planets. He was about to flick another planet into the second sun when he stopped suddenly and a small grin crossed his face. He knew what he had to do...more...

Additional Information

One of the things that sets Ages of Athiria apart from traditional MMORPGs is the idea of having player built and governed cities. Allowing the player to be part of the law making and the enforcing side of things with jail, banishment and even permadeath (yes if a player breaks the wrong law int he wrong city they may find themselves banned forever from the game on that character)being available to them as punishments. This adds a new dimension to the community side of the game.

Another feature of this game is the commerce side of things. A player can rent premises in which to run a business and employ an NPC to work for them, for a wage of course. Taxes are collected from all depending ont he taxationr ates of the city the player is in.
